Types of Maritime Accidents
Boating Accidents
Residents and tourists take full advantage of our lengthy coastline and waterways, enjoying sailing, motorboats, and other types of recreational watercraft. Boating accidents are an unfortunate part of these activities, often caused by operator inexperience and negligence or mechanical problems.
Boating Under the Influence (BUI)
According to 2013 U.S. Coast Guard statistics, alcohol use was a leading factor in recreational boating accidents, contributing to over 14% of injuries and deaths where the primary cause was known. In fact, when accidents resulted in fatalities, alcohol was the primary contributing factor.
Jet Ski Accidents
Riding jet skis is a popular recreational activity, but it can also be dangerous for adults and children. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 601 injuries and 36 deaths caused by jet skis (or personal watercraft) occurred in 2013, and almost a third of those injured were kids and teens.
